Change In The World: Billy Rodriguez

I have read and have been told that change is only created by crisis, and that it takes for something to shock the minds and hearts of millions in order for change to be enacted.

If I were personally asked, what I would change in this world, it would definitely be the playing field. What I mean by playing field, is the level of assistance or non-assistance that everyone receives worldwide. I would like to make everyone equal, so that everyone can have a fair shot at their piece of the pie.

I personally feel like the only reason that the underprivileged are still considered underprivileged is because they haven’t truly had the opportunity or the fair chance of achieving all they can. They have been burdened with years of poverty and uneducated ancestors, and I would personally like to rid everyone of that burden and provide a clean slate. If this is truly survival of the fittest, then let’s eliminate someone’s ancestors and years of wealth and see how some people will survive without that cushion of support. I believe that those that are willing to achieve will, but if you are faced with such odds since birth, it makes, making your dreams into realities much harder and for some even impossible. I want to give everyone a fair chance, and rid the world of the bias’s and isms that it burdens its people with. With my change, survival of the fittest will truly exist and you would really be able to see those that truly work hard, and those that were only granted the best because they have always had that luxury.

Change happens whether or nor people want it to.  As such, it's important to be able to keep up with change.  One of the best ways to do so is to keep up with the news.  Id doesn't really matter how; read it on the internet, watch it... anything.  Any way of getting information is a positive one (as long as you make sure to acknowledge bias from your source).  As an informed citizen, each of us holds the potential to not just watch change happen, but actively be an agent of change to shape the world as we see best.  Especially with The Supreme Court coming up on a decision regarding gay marriage, it is of paramour importance to remain informed.

I think change is a good thing because it allows a person and society to grow as a whole.  Albert Einstein once said, "The world as we have created it is a process of our thinking.  It cannot be changed without changing our thinking."  To change the world, people have to get out of their way of thinking and be more open minded to other ideas.

For example, the decision about allowing gay marriage would create a big change in America.  For this to be an effective change, many people will have to change the way they feel towards gay people.  I am not saying that just because it gets approved that everything will be great and homophobia will no longer exist, but you have to start somewhere.

On another note, I would like to see a change when it comes to school violence.  It is really upsetting to hear stories about a classroom that has been shot up or a child that has committed suicide due to bullying.  I think there should be better security and counseling in these schools to prevent incidents like these from occurring.  Without change, history tends to repeat itself and there are plenty of things from the past that we do not want to haunt us in the present.

I think one big problem that America has is the education system. They have tried to pass programs such as "no child left behind" and they are not actually helping the students to succeed. Latino students make up a huge part of the population of students but are the least likely to continue their education.I would love to see something that would aid kids and help them to further their education.

I also think another problem that not only the US is facing but the world is over abuse of power that impacts many innocent people whether it involves money, jobs, or shelter. Many people throughout the world can not even raise their families up because of systems that are made to make them fail. These systems are made by powerful people in high places.

Change is something many want but are afraid of, or do not believe that can happen. I think the only true way for big change will be to come together as one, one person may not be able to change the world but if the world comes together as one then there can be change.

The change I want to see in America is more equality in every aspect of it, race wise, gender wise, and status wise. If there are gay people in this world who want to marry then I do not see why that should be challenged, they should all be treated as equal as a straight couple. In order for this kind of change to happen people need to become more open minded and unite as one instead of focusing so much on fighting each other.

"Be the change you want to see in the world ...."

One thing that extremely bothers me in today's world and especially in the United States is the way the human population abuses the earth. It's mind boggling how the human race can deteriorate the place we inhabit. The ripping of the Ozone Layer, the melting of the polar ice caps, both results of the carelessness of humans.

I just wish that the human race would be more mindful , the small things really add up. For instance, if Americans recycled just 1/10 of their newspapers 25 million trees could be saved every year. Do you know how important that is? Trees utilize carbon dioxide and give off oxygen, two results that are extremely beneficial to humans.

Recycling just one aluminum can provide enough energy for you to listen to a whole album on your iPod, only one. We need to come to the realization that these types of wasteful ways we exhibit are only going to to harm us in the long run. Stop the littering and start the conserving, Mother Nature can only carry but so much. This type of behavior is "trashy" ... the human race needs to clean up their act.

Life is full of change, that's what makes the world go round. Technology is always getting better, different laws are being passed to change society, and the views of the world are always altering. It’s all part of life and we all have to learn to adjust to it all, which is part of the reason life is so hard. Everyone and everything is bound to change whether you want it to or not. Life is about how we adjust and therefore react to those changes. The only way to keep up with change nowadays is to stay informed and be true to ourselves. We all have our own beliefs and deep down we all know that only the strong will survive. It all goes back to natural selection. Your only options are either adjust, tolerate and survive or not. It's harsh, but it’s the simple truth.

There are so many changes that I want to see in America, but the number one change that I would LOVE to see is more people genuinely helping each other and less people fighting for money and power. If you look around, everyone in America is working to fulfill his or her inner greed for money. I am graduating college in the pursuit of getting a great job, so I can make money. Hustlers hustle to make a lot of easy money. People play the lotto and gamble to win big and have more money. America is money hungry and I would love to live to the day that America is no longer hungry for money! I truly believe that there are more important things in the world than money. If Americans truly, whole heartedly helped each other to become a better people as a whole, America as a country would not be in the state of economy that we are in right now. The distribution of wealth is only making the rich more wealthy and the poor poorer. If we all help each other to reach our own personal goals of happiness, then America would be a wonderful, peaceful place. If people stopped using, backstabbing and stepping on others to get ahead in their careers, there would be a better distribution of money and the middle class would not be as close to the poor class as they are. The middle class would actually look like the middle and not a lengthy dragged out poor class struggling to reach to the rich. The rich only employ the rich and the poor work hard to only make it as far as only making what the rich make in a day, in a month. I'm honestly disgusted with the common mentality of Americans who believe that money is the holy grail of life.  Happiness and satisfaction is more important. It no only makes you a better person, but you also don't have to backstab anyone to get there.

As for the world, the only change I want to see is world peace. It may sound cliché, but it's real and it is attainable. If more countries worked together for the greater good of their country and then the world, the world would be a utopia. Of course there will always be the normal dangers of the world and cruel people here and there, but if a country's leader stand's strong for it's people and isn't too concerned about ruling the world, then maybe this world has a chance of becoming the utopia that so many of us have dreamed of. If countries worked together to reach the same goal, like creating better ways of preserving the ozone layer and keeping a healthy environment instead of each country secretly manufacturing weapons of mass destruction to kill the next, then maybe world peace wouldn't be such a far fetch idea. The world can be a utopia; we just have to work at it, one country at a time.

The Supreme Courts challenge on same sex marriage is quite a turning point. Whether for better or worse is a personal opinion amongst many of those protesters. It certainly has me on the edge of my seat, because regardless of the outcome it will be historical. Personally a change I would want to see in America is a change in the education system.

I haven’t quite worked out all the nooks and crannies of a new system. Our education system has had very few reforms in the last century. This archaic system may have worked when it was initially created, but now it can barely hold up in modern times. The few changes made in recent years have also proven to do more harm than good.

Currently our education system focuses more on numbers and accountability then actually teaching the material. Curriculums have been standardized when in fact the zone of proximal development (level of challenge presented to students in order to enhance learning) varies among students. Currently I am assisting in a kindergarten class where one third of the students are above average, one third is at average level, and the last third is struggling to keep up. The standardized curriculum works for only one third of the class. The other students are either bored or frustrated. The one teacher in the classroom can’t tailor her lesson for each student.

I don’t know enough or have done enough for research to be able to construct a new education system or implement any reforms, but I have a few ideas. The first thing I would add to the current curriculum for grade school is an emphasis on grammar. My school barely had a lesson about proper grammar use, and in turn has caused a detriment to my generation. Another is an emphasis on technology.

While I believe the basics should still be taught such as grammar, math, social studies, English etc., we need to acknowledge the growing importance of technology. The future of America should be able to utilize technology for more than the latest social media.

Another reform I would implement is team-based learning from an early age all the way through high school. While personally I may not be a fan of group work I think it is vital to future generations. For the most part we are taught to do our work independently except for those rare occasions. Yet when we graduate from school and shift into the workforce we rarely work individually. While we may have our own responsibilities, we also have employees and employers. Not one successful company is run by one person. The work force is constantly working with teams and in constant interaction with co-workers. Our education system should reflect this and prepare younger generations.

What change do you want to see in America? In the world?

John Wooden, one of the most successful coaches of all time, is quoted as saying, “If we magnified blessings as much as we magnify disappointments, we would all be much happier.”  I think this quote just about sums up one of the biggest changes I’d like to see in the U.S. – a more responsible media.  When you turn on the news, it’s hard to find a positive story that leaves you feeling hopeful about the world - it’s usually some breaking news about potential wars, viruses, government corruption and scandals, etc. To be fair, this stuff is out there and it deserves to have a light shined on it, but I think that the media has a responsibility to be more balanced in their approach to spreading information.

With regard to politics, if the media continuously focuses on sensational news, then that’s the type of stuff that will enter into the national conversation. And when gridlock and dysfunction and political gaffes are central to the discussion, the national conversation slows to a crawl and most signs of progress and meaningful change are hard to see. Who would want to stick their neck out if they’re just going to get burned for it?

The whole thing is a complex issue. The press should be free to write about any issue, but I believe that this freedom comes with some responsibility, especially because with the Internet, news is so pervasive.  I think one goal of journalism in general is to assist society, to keep it functioning properly. At times this means exposing corruption and shortcomings, or informing the public about a potential threat. In general though, I think this is a duty to present a clear overall picture of the world. Ideally, this clearer picture would lead to a better informed audience that has the means and the will to act.

There are many issues in America and in the world that I would like to see changed such as the poverty rate, human trafficking, and many more. But one problem that I would like to see change in the world is freedom of religion in other parts of the world.

Currently there is a pastor, Saeed Aberdini, who is an American citizen being held in Iran. He was arrested by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard in July of 2012 when he went to Iran to open an orphanage. While there, his passports were seized and he was faced with charges relating to his Christian faith. He has faced solitary confinement, beating, aggressive interrogations, and stood trial in front of an Iranian judge. All of this because he has a different set of beliefs than the people of the Islam religion.

People should not be persecuted because of their beliefs, everyone should have the right to believe and have faith in whatever or whomever they choose. We may have freedom of religion in America but there are many other countries where individuals are not allowed to practice or express their religion because they could be imprisoned or possibly killed. This is one of the MANY changes I wish to see in the world.

Hello World! The illegal pet trade of exotic animals needs to stop! Most of these animals die faster when they're kept as pets. This unfortunately leads to the endangerment of their species. This angers me because most of these animals are way too cute to die, such as the Slow loris.

The Slow loris is a type of monkey found in Southeast Asia. Criminal organizations intentionally clip off their venomous teeth to protect the future pet owner. This action can cause infections, blood loss, and stress to the Slow loris, and will eventually lead to an early death. This is why the Slow loris is becoming an endangered species.

The Slow loris is just an example of many animals in the illegal pet trade that intentionally get injured to make them "domesticated". This pet trade has to be stopped before some species becomes extinct.

One big change that I would like to see in America is better education systems in urban or lower income communities. I know that this is an issue that may have already been addressed; however, there are still many changes that need to be made.

I feel that there is a different standard of teaching in lower income communities which ultimately causes a negative effect on the students.  If the teachers are not educating these students with the same amount of effort as those in higher income communities, the students will not produce the results needed to succeed.  How can they if they are not given the same proper resources as well as structure?  I also feel that if the right amount of time, effort and money were placed in bettering the education system, this would prove to have an overall positive outcome on America’s economy.  More students would have that chance to further their education by going to college, and eventually entering the workforce with the proper skills needed in order to be successful. There would, in turn, be less unemployed Americans.  In addition, I would also like to see such happen in the world in general.  Many countries do not have good education systems, and without such, many countries do not have the proper resources available to them in order to further develop.  Better education would ultimately lead to overall improvement of these countries.  In addition, as previously mentioned, better education may also assist in stimulating as well as stabilizing the economy in other countries.

The world that we live in has everything to help us in beneficial ways. It has it's beauty, it's advantages as well as it's resources. But every good thing has a bad side to it and this world isn't any different. There are numerous things I wish I could change for the better.

The poverty in the third world countries, the conflicts going on and the number of innocent lives being killed over issues that isn't worth anyone's life are the main problems that grasp my attention. I know life isn't fair and it really isn't to those people who have no shelter, clothes or food to survive on and go throughout their days; meanwhile we have these high end rich people who blow countless dollars on superficial things that aren't really a necessity. Lives being taken over political issues and resources have to stop. Peace and compromise should be the method of resolving something, not threats and bloodshed. But I guess what can you do right. Everything has to have a balance and sadly in this world, keeping it in balance results to people living poorly and losing lives.

Change has always been a big part of any culture. We have to keep up with the ever-changing rules/laws, technology, science, etc. Sometimes the change is good and sometimes we find it to be bad.

As a immigrant I want to see change in my country, a change that would allow for its natives to stay there and not be forced to migrate. I want to see changes where I live; changes that would allow us to grow as a community. Primarily I want to see changes on the way we deal with each other, no I am not asking for Wold Peace, but I would like to see us as a whole finding a way of compromising between each other.

I wish people didn’t resort to horrible acts of violence to make a political point.

I wish people were better at communicating their displeasure and used their words and ideas to convince others to support them, not intimidation and fear.

I wish people could cure all those terrible diseases that ravage the bodies and minds of our loved ones while we stand there impotently and watch them waste away.

I wish people didn’t live their lives in quiet desperation just going through the motions until the day they are nailed in a coffin.

I wish everyone lived their life with a sense of purpose and meaning.

I wish people could have a disagreement and not resort to name calling or raised voices or belittling others to inflate their own insecure ego.

I wish everyone had a roof over their heads, especially during the bitterly cold winters.

I wish people didn’t have to wonder where their next meal was going to come from.

I wish children didn’t have to die from diseases that have been cured already simply because they didn’t have access to the proper medical treatments.

I wish people didn’t have to choose between drinking filthy water or dying of thirst.

I wish everything didn’t revolve around money.

I wish people weren’t so angry.

I wish people didn’t complain about boredom when there is a whole broken world outside their window.

I wish people weren’t so selfish.

I wish people wouldn’t spend so much time looking at what makes others different from them.

I wish people didn’t waste so much of our lives on trivial pursuits and games.

I wish people wouldn’t look to entertainment as a way to escape their current reality.

I wish people read more and tried to educate themselves before expressing an opinion on a subject.

I wish people didn’t waste time with hate and worry.

I wish people didn’t get offended so easily.

I wish people laughed more.
