My advice to students regarding social media is to have fun. This is a great way to communicate with your friends when you are away from them, and also a great way to keep in contact with some you may not see at all. Still, it is important to realize that the information you put online is not only available to your friends, no matter how private your page is. Once you post a picture on Facebook, for example, their company owns that photograph and you agreed this when you checked off that long policy no one ever reads. I would suggest you be mindful of this and be selective in what you share online.
Although these social media websites make it easier to communicate with people, they don't have to be your only form of communication. Remember how it feels to get a birthday phone call instead of posts on your wall, or a phone call from a loved one instead of a message. There is a good aspect to these sites but it is not the only option for communication. Finding a balance is key. Just be safe on these sites and help to make it a safe space for your peers.
