Thoughts On Social Media: Kimberly Jones

Social media, if used correctly, has potential to be a great resource. It allows people to stay connected, as well as permits people to stay updated on what is going on in the world.  Social media may provide a sense of comfort for some as they may be able to express themselves without having to necessarily reveal to the world who they really are.  You can create who you want to be, without being questioned.  However, with this freedom of expression also comes a sense of vulnerability as someone may easily be lying about who they are to attract others (ex: “Catfish” the TV series).

My advice that I would give to others, especially students regarding social media is to just be very careful and be very aware.  Not everything expressed throughout social media reflects the truth, so you have to be extremely aware of what you choose to believe.  On the other end of the spectrum, students should also be very cautious about what they choose to post regarding themselves when it comes to social media.  One bad post can ruin a good reputation.  I feel that if used appropriately, social media can truly bring people together.  However, if abused, it definitely has the potential to push others away.
