Good news Albany High School students, the STEP Club is back and better than ever! The STEP Club opened yesterday, and our tutors are ready to get back to work and students with all types of homework!

The programming hours are still the same (3pm-5pm) and so is the location (RM 325). So please stop by, get a snack, talk to college tutors and get your work done!

Welcome Back!  Just a friendly reminder that the UAlbany STEP Club is back in session, today Monday November 26th. We at STEP hope that everyone had a wonderful break and are now focused to finish the rest of the year out strong! We hope to see you guys at programming!

UAlbany STEP Club will be closed tomorrow, Tuesday November 20th, and Wednesday November 21st 2012 due to Thanksgiving Break. Programming will resume on Monday November 26th 2012. The month of October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It is a international campaign created by major breast cancer charities to promote awareness of the disease, raise funds for the cause and prevention and in addition to provide support to those that have been affected by breast cancer.

To promote awareness and raise funds for breast cancer, the UAlbany STEP Club decided to fundraise during the month of October within Albany High School. The idea was created by Albany High School faculty member, Ellen Mall-John, who is a survivor of the disease. Mc'Kayla, a STEP Club student, coordinated with Mrs. Mall-John, on what to fundraise, and who we should donate the funds to.

The initiative got everyone together, students and teachers, and tutors. They were all doing something to contribute, which was truly a great feeling. We made breast cancer awareness ribbons and keychains and in addition to that we made a giant card that was filled with words of inspiration and stories from students whose family members were affected by breast cancer.

Another touching memory from fundraising was who we received the funds from. Majority of the funds were from High School students that donated whatever they had to contribute to our fundraising. It was warming to see young people being engaged, involved and giving back to a great cause like this.

The collected funds are to be given to the New York Oncology Hematology Cancer Center in Albany, NY.

The UAlbany STEP Club provides an enriching experience that money cannot buy. Students that have actively attended the program over the years, describe the STEP Program as a second family, and the STEP club is no different.

What makes the club unique is the academic and social support it provides. The club provides free tutoring to the high school students with our diverse groups of University at Albany tutors. The tutors are able to help in any subject that students need assistance in, whether it's math, science, english, history or even a foreign language!

The club also provides junior and seniors college readiness by providing free SAT Prep sessions during the fall and spring. The SAT prep sessions readies you for the real test and provides tips and methods on how to score well on the SATs.

The tutors provide social support, by just simply lending an ear. They are always available during programming hours to listen and talk to you about whatever you may need, whether it is about the college experience, SAT's, music, movies, or just comforting words about your day. The tutors are always there to help!

"The icing on the cake", are the enriching trips that the club provides. Last year students that attended the program went on recreational and educational trips. Some of the most notable trips last year were: the Bodies Exhibit, Niagara Falls, University of Buffalo, UAlbany Shadow Day and the STEP Conference.

Welcome to the first post of our wonderful official blog: "The UAlbany STEP Club Blog." The club has been in existence since January 2012, and has returned with a bang this academic year in September.

The purpose of this blog is to provide supplementary support to the students that attend the club. The blog was  created to be multifaceted. The blog will provide access for students to find educational and professional opportunities, in addition to posting interesting links and articles within the S.T.E.M fields. The blog will share current events within today's world,  and post the funniest phrases said during each day of the program. The blog's overall aim is to achieve a deeper integration with the students, the high school,  the UAlbany staff and the STEP program.
